Gramenet del Besòs — today absorbed into Santa Coloma de Gramenet — was one of hundreds of Catalan municipalities that issued emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republic's coinage supply collapsed in 1936. These locally issued notes, collectively catalogued under the broader "Guerra Civil" series, were legal only within the issuing municipality's limits, which for an industrial suburb of Barcelona meant a very narrow circulation zone.
Indústries Gràfiques Piulats was a Barcelona commercial printer, not a specialist security firm — wartime necessity, not choice.
