Gilet is a small municipality in the Camp de Morvedre comarca of Valencia, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone coinage effectively vanished from circulation after 1936. The Consejo Municipal stepped in where the central government could not — or would not — supply small change.
The Turró and Garipuy-Montagut catalogues both list this emission, though concordance between Spanish local issue references is often imperfect for notes this obscure. Survival rates for Valencian municipal fraccionals of this period vary enormously by town; Gilet's issues appear infrequently in specialized auction rooms.
