Foyos — a small municipality in the Valencian Community — issued emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War when Republican-held territories faced a chronic shortage of small change. The central government could not supply enough coin, and hundreds of local councils, cooperatives, and trade unions stepped in to fill the gap. This 50 Céntimos note is one such piece, produced by Tip. M. Zamit in the nearby town of Meliana, a printer clearly serving several local administrations in the Valencia orbit simultaneously.
At roughly 46 × 43 mm, this is nearly square — an unusual proportion even among the wildly inconsistent formats of Civil War local issues. The thick card stock was a practical choice: flimsy paper in high-turnover fractional circulation deteriorated within weeks.
