Esplús is a small agricultural municipality in the Huesca province of Aragon, and like hundreds of other Spanish villages during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional currency in 1937 after metallic coin effectively vanished from circulation. The Republican government had failed to solve the small-change crisis at the national level, forcing municipalities — many with no financial infrastructure whatsoever — to print their own solutions.
The C.A.M. printer in Barcelona supplied a significant proportion of these municipal issues across Catalonia and Aragon, producing short runs for individual councils on demand. Gari Mon 617-C identifies this as one of the documented variants within the Esplús emission.
