Els Omells de na Gaia is a tiny municipality in the Urgell comarca of Catalonia, and this 50 céntimos note is among the most obscure of the Republican-era emergency emissions. During the Spanish Civil War, the central government's inability to maintain fractional coin supply pushed hundreds of Catalan municipalities — including many with populations in the low hundreds — to issue their own paper money under authority granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 1937.
Turró catalogues this piece as #1711, placing it within a documented series but offering little evidence of significant surviving quantities. Small-town Catalan Civil War notes on thick card frequently suffered high attrition through wartime use and the deliberate destruction that followed Franco's victory.
