El Rourell is a small municipality in the Camp de Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Spanish Civil War, it issued its own fractional currency when Republican Spain's coinage supply collapsed almost entirely after 1936. These local emergency notes — called *moneda municipal* or *moneda de necessitat* — were a strictly improvised response to the hoarding and disappearance of metal coin, sanctioned by the Generalitat de Catalunya but produced locally with whatever printer was at hand.
Imprenta Solé in Tarragona handled several of these municipal commissions from the surrounding region. Turró's catalog documents over 2,200 such emissions across Catalonia; that El Rourell's issue falls at #2224 places it among the later-documented, smaller-run examples.
