El Papiol is a small municipality in the Baix Llobregat comarca near Barcelona, and this 50 céntimos note is one of hundreds of locally issued emergency fractional notes — "moneda de paper" — that flooded Catalonia and the rest of the Republican zone after July 1936. The military uprising triggered an immediate hoarding of metal coin, which vanished from circulation almost overnight, forcing municipalities down to village level to print their own small-denomination scrip to keep local commerce moving.
Turró catalogues this as a single type for El Papiol, suggesting the municipality issued in very limited variety. At 66 × 40 mm on card stock, these tiny pieces were easily lost or damaged, and surviving examples from small Catalan ajuntaments are genuinely difficult to locate.
