El Palau d'Anglesola is a small municipality in the Pla d'Urgell comarca of Lleida, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, its ajuntament was forced into improvised paper currency when the Republican government's coin production collapsed in 1936–37. These local emission notes — collectively catalogued under the "Guerra Civil" issues — were typically authorized under the Generalitat de Catalunya's emergency framework but designed and printed entirely at the municipal level, which accounts for the wide variation in paper quality, format, and crudeness of execution across the series.
