El Morell is a small municipality in the Camp de Tarragona comarca, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 when Republican-zone coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. The Generalitat de Catalunya formally authorized municipal issues under decree, but each town managed its own printing — which is why these notes vary so wildly in production quality, and why the Turró catalog runs to thousands of entries.
At under five centimeters across, this is about as small as practical currency gets. Losses and attrition rates for notes this size were extreme; survivors are nearly always from small hoarded batches rather than individual circulated pieces.
