Domenys del Penedès is a small municipality in the Alt Penedès comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similar townships during the Spanish Civil War, it issued its own fractional currency in 1937 when the Republic's coin supply effectively collapsed. The Generalitat de Catalunya had authorized local governments to fill the gap, producing a proliferation of emergency paper — over a thousand different municipal issues across the region.

The printer, Arts Gràfiques Barnadas of El Vendrell, handled several local issues in the Penedès area during this period. Proximity mattered; municipal councils couldn't easily commission work from Barcelona during wartime disruption.
