Deifontes is a small municipality in the province of Granada, and like dozens of similar Andalusian pueblos, it resorted to issuing its own fractional paper during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Republican-held Spain from mid-1936 onward. The withdrawal and hoarding of coins — silver and copper alike — left local commerce almost entirely paralyzed within weeks of the Civil War's outbreak.
The Gari Montané reference is incomplete, which suggests this particular emission was either unconfirmed at time of cataloguing or survives in very limited documented examples. Municipal issues from villages of this size were typically printed locally in tiny runs and rarely left the immediate area.
