Cornudella de Montsant is a small Priorat wine village — population well under a thousand in 1937 — and its municipal council issued this note during the acute small-change shortage that followed the Republican government's loss of control over metallic coin circulation in the early Civil War period. Hundreds of Catalan municipalities did the same, flooding the zone with locally produced paper fraccions that technically had no validity beyond their own township limits.

The Turró catalogue remains the authoritative reference for these Catalan guerra civil emissions, and Cornudella's series is among the more obscure entries — a reflection of both small print runs and low survival rates from such a minor issuing authority.
