Chiva de Morella is a small municipality in the Maestrazgo comarca of Castellón, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional emergency currency when the Republic's small change dried up. The Consejo Municipal — the locally controlled governing body under Republican administration — authorized these notes to keep day-to-day commerce functioning. At 56 × 35 mm, this is about as small as paper money gets, and the fragility of the format means survivors in any condition are genuinely uncommon.
Catalogued under Gari Montserrat's regional reference for Valencia, the 535-A designation suggests at least one variant exists within the type.
