Chiva is a small municipality in Valencia province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local council — the Consejo Municipal — issued its own fractional currency when the Republican government's coin supply collapsed in 1936–37. These emergency notes, known collectively as papel moneda local, were authorised under Republican decree but produced entirely at the local level, which is why the printing quality, paper stock, and denominations vary so dramatically from one town to the next.

The official stamp is the only security feature, which tells you everything about the production circumstances. Counterfeiting a 50 céntimos note from Chiva was hardly a strategic priority for anyone.
