Castillo de Locubín is a small municipality in the province of Jaén, Andalusia, and like hundreds of Spanish towns it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republican government's Decree of 21 August 1936 authorized local councils to print provisional small change to address the acute coin shortage. These municipal issues were produced under improvised conditions — often on whatever card stock or heavy paper was locally available — and circulated almost entirely within the issuing township. The practical reach of a note like this was measured in city blocks, not kilometers.
Survival rates for these hyper-local emissions vary wildly. Many were redeemed or simply discarded once the crisis passed; others were never officially withdrawn at all.
