Cangas de Onís was one of hundreds of Spanish municipalities that issued emergency fractional paper during the Civil War after silver and copper coinage vanished from circulation almost overnight in mid-1936. These ayuntamiento-issued vales were purely local instruments, accepted only within the issuing municipality and frequently refused even a few kilometers away. The Gari Mon catalog — the standard reference for Spanish Civil War local issues — lists this note without an assigned number, which typically indicates a late-documented or poorly-attested piece rather than a common oversight.
