Canena is a small municipality in Jaén province, Andalusia, and like hundreds of other Spanish towns it resorted to issuing its own emergency fractional paper during the acute coin shortage of the Civil War years — roughly 1936 to 1939, when Republican-held areas found bronze and silver coins disappearing from circulation almost immediately after the conflict began.
