Calaf is a small town in the comarca of Anoia, Catalonia, and like hundreds of other Catalan and Spanish municipalities, it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republican government's chronic small-coin shortage left local commerce essentially paralyzed. These municipally-issued pieces — collectively called "moneda de necessitat" — were produced in extraordinary variety, some on cardboard, some on paper, and a handful, like Calaf's, on nitrocellulose-based polymer stock, which was unusual for a town of this size.
Turró 578 is among the more obscure entries in the Calaf municipal series. The handstamp security feature was typical of locally-validated scrip where printing resources were minimal and authentication depended on an official ink impression applied after production.
