Benifallet is a small municipality in the Tarragona province of Catalonia, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional currency when central coinage disappeared from circulation almost entirely after 1936. The Republican government's inability to maintain adequate coin supply forced local councils — Consells Municipals under the Generalitat's framework — to fill the gap themselves, often contracting whatever printer was nearby and accessible. Imprenta Querol in Tortosa, a river town on the Ebro roughly ten kilometers downstream, handled issues for several surrounding municipalities in this period.
The sole security feature is an official stamp — typical for these emergency emissions, where physical authentication mattered more than sophisticated anti-counterfeiting.
