One of hundreds of small-denomination emergency notes — *bitllets locals* — issued by Catalan municipal councils during the Civil War, when Republican authorities permitted local governments to print their own low-value scrip to address chronic small-change shortages. Bellcaire d'Urgell is a minor agricultural municipality in the Noguera comarca of Lleida province; its council almost certainly produced this note in very limited quantity, as demand in such a small population center would have been modest at best.

Imprenta Sol, the Lleida press responsible for printing, produced scrip for numerous surrounding municipalities during this period, which occasionally creates attribution confusion when undated or unsigned sheets surface without their municipal stamps intact.
