Bellaguarda is a small municipality in the Garrigues comarca of Lleida, and this 50 céntimos note is one of hundreds of hyperlocal emergency issues produced across Republican-held Catalonia during the Civil War. The Franco blockade and hoarding of metallic coin created an acute small-change shortage from mid-1936 onward, forcing even tiny villages to print their own fractional paper. Imprenta Sugrañes in Tarragona handled a significant number of these municipal commissions, which accounts for the consistent print quality across several otherwise unrelated Catalan issuers.

Turró catalogues this as #354 — a relatively obscure entry even within a field of obscure issues.
