Balsareny is a small municipality in the Bages comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similar towns it issued emergency paper money during 1937 as the Republic's small-denomination coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply outpaced by wartime demand. These municipal notes, collectively known as "moneda de paper local," were authorized under the Generalitat de Catalunya and printed at whatever local or regional facilities were available. Turró's catalog remains the primary reference for this vast and chaotic series.
Balsareny's issues are among the less commonly encountered in the series, reflecting the town's modest population rather than any particular scarcity event.
