Balenyà is a small municipality in Osona, and this 50 céntimos note is one of the thousands of emergency paper issues produced by Catalan local authorities during the Spanish Civil War, when the disappearance of metallic coinage from circulation created an acute shortage of small change. The Ajuntament turned to Imprenta Anglada in nearby Vic, which handled a considerable volume of these local emergency issues for towns across the comarca.
Turró catalogues it at #280, placing it firmly within the documented Catalan municipal series. The official stamp was the primary — and essentially only — authentication mechanism.
