Artés is a small municipality in the Bages comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of other Catalan and Republican-held towns, it issued its own fractional emergency currency during the Civil War after the withdrawal of metallic coin from circulation in 1936–37. These local notes — known collectively as moneda de paper or paper money of the municipalities — were authorized under the Generalitat de Catalunya's framework for local monetary substitutes, though the practical oversight was minimal and designs varied wildly from town to town.
Imprenta Boixeda in nearby Manresa handled production for several Bages-area councils, which gives this issue a slightly more professional finish than some village-press equivalents. Turró catalogued over 1,600 distinct municipal issues; #218 places Artés well into the mid-range of that corpus.
