Arenys de Mar was one of hundreds of Catalan municipalities that issued their own fractional emergency currency during 1936–1937, after the outbreak of the Civil War severed reliable access to small-denomination coinage. The Consell Municipal effectively became a local monetary authority by necessity, not by any formal legislative grant. Imprenta Ausetana in Vic supplied notes to numerous towns across the comarca during this period — their press output for municipal clients was prolific enough that the printing quality is often more consistent than the issuing authority itself.
The official stamp is the primary authentication device, applied at point of issue rather than at the press.
