Almacelles is a small agricultural municipality in the Lleida plain, and this 50 céntimos note is a product of the anarchist-influenced local wartime economy of Republican Catalonia in 1937. With the Nationalist advance disrupting normal banking channels and the Republican government struggling to push sufficient small-denomination coinage into circulation, hundreds of Catalan municipalities issued their own paper or cardboard currency — a phenomenon that reached its peak that year.
Imprenta Sol in Lleida produced notes for numerous nearby municipalities during this period, which means the printing quality is consistent but the designs often run thin on artistry. Turró documents over a thousand such local issues; Almacelles is among the more obscure entries in that catalog.
