Alhama de Salmerón is a small municipality in the province of Cuenca, and this 50 céntimos note is a product of the fractional currency crisis that paralyzed small-town commerce across Republican Spain from 1936 onward. As silver and bronze coins disappeared from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply lost to the disruptions of war — municipal councils throughout the country took it upon themselves to print their own emergency scrip, often without formal authorization from the Republican treasury.
Papelería Lacoste in Almería supplied printed emergency notes to multiple municipalities in the region, which means this issue shares production characteristics with several others from the same shop.
