Alfara dels Ports is a tiny inland municipality in the Ports de Morella comarca — fewer than 300 inhabitants even in the 1930s. During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican government's inability to maintain a functioning coin supply prompted hundreds of Catalan and Valencian municipalities to issue their own emergency fractional currency under a 1937 decree. This note is one of those local solutions: a community printing money because silver and copper had effectively vanished from everyday trade.
The printer, S. G. de P. at Carrer de Borrell in Barcelona, handled a considerable volume of these municipal emergency issues across the region. Turró catalogues this as #96.
