Alcover is a small municipality in the Camp de Tarragona, and this note is a product of the emergency local currency system that proliferated across Republican Catalonia from 1936 onward. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, metallic coin all but vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply unavailable — and hundreds of municipalities were forced to print their own fractional paper to keep local commerce functional. The Generalitat de Catalunya eventually tried to regulate the issue, but many ajuntaments had already been printing independently for months.
Imprenta Solé in Tarragona handled production for several municipalities in the province, which occasionally makes attribution tricky when printer's marks are absent.
