Albesa is a small municipality in the Lleida province of Catalonia. This 50 céntimos note was issued by the local town council during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone faced a severe shortage of fractional coinage — copper and silver having been hoarded or requisitioned. Hundreds of Catalan municipalities printed their own emergency paper, sanctioned loosely by the Generalitat, and Albesa was among the smallest to do so. Turró catalogs these issues exhaustively, and the numbering places this firmly within that 1936–1939 wartime municipal emission wave.
The official stamp was the primary anti-counterfeiting measure — a reasonable precaution even at village scale, since forged local scrip did circulate in some areas.
