Adra is a small coastal municipality in Almería, and like hundreds of Spanish towns it resorted to locally-issued emergency paper during the Civil War when Republican-zone coinage disappeared from circulation almost entirely after 1936. These municipal notes — technically vales or billetes de necesidad — were produced with whatever printing resources were at hand, often a local press or stationery shop, which accounts for the enormous variation in production quality across the series.
