Arenys de Mar was one of hundreds of Catalan municipalities that issued its own fractional emergency currency during the Civil War after the Republican government's coin shortage left local commerce effectively paralyzed. These ajuntament-issued notes — called "moneda local" — filled the gap left by hoarded silver and copper coinage, and were theoretically redeemable but practically worthless outside the issuing town.
Imprenta Ausetana in Vic supplied notes to numerous municipalities across the region, producing runs for different local authorities from essentially the same printing infrastructure. The "2 Rals" subtitle is a deliberate archaism — the real had been out of official circulation for decades, but rural Catalonia still used the term colloquially as a half-peseta equivalent.
