Belgian municipal food committees — the voedingskomiteiten — issued emergency scrip throughout the German occupation after the national banking system effectively froze for small transactions. Niederbrakel (French: Nederbrakel) is a small municipality in East Flanders, and its committee note belongs to a vast, poorly documented category of hyper-local wartime paper. Most villages issued their own; standardization was nonexistent, and survival rates vary wildly depending on whether the issuing body kept records or bothered to redeem and cancel outstanding stock.
Attribution and cataloguing of these municipal pieces remains incomplete. Many were never formally demonetized.
