Trial pieces — essais — from the Monnaie de Paris were routinely struck in precious metals for official presentation and archival purposes, never for circulation. This 1962 piece predates Monaco's adoption of the franc as its sole legal tender under the 1962 monetary convention with France, which replaced the earlier 1945 agreement and brought Monaco's currency policy into formal alignment with the Banque de France. The timing of these essais reflects the administrative machinery of that transition.
