| Obverse description | Bare-headed left-facing effigy of Napoleon III, Emperor of the French, modeled with naturalistic detail including a short beard and swept hair. The imperial legend NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR arcs around the periphery, divided by the portrait. The engraver's signature BARRE appears in the lower exergue beneath the truncation. A fine dentilated border frames the entire design, consistent with the refined neoclassical style characteristic of Barre's work at the Monnaie de Paris. |
