Issued under the FAO's "Food for All" coinage program, which recruited developing-nation mints and governments to produce low-denomination circulating coins carrying agricultural themes in exchange for technical and financial assistance. The Democratic Republic of the Congo's participation came during a period of extraordinary instability — the Second Congo War was still active in 2002, involving at least six foreign armies and dozens of armed factions across the country's eastern territories.
Whether these coins reached general circulation in any meaningful volume is genuinely unclear given the near-total collapse of formal commerce in large parts of the country at the time.
