Bône's Chamber of Commerce issued emergency token coinage in 1915 because the outbreak of World War I had triggered a hoarding crisis across French Algeria — metallic coins vanished from circulation almost immediately as the public lost confidence in the financial system. Chambers of commerce throughout Algeria and metropolitan France filled the vacuum with locally authorized necessity pieces. The Bône issues are among the less common of these Algerian emergency series.
This essai — a trial strike rather than a circulating piece — was produced to test the dies before full issue. Essais of the Bône chamber tokens survive in far smaller numbers than the circulation strikes.
