The Trésorerie de Nouméa emergency issues of 1943 were produced under Free French administration after New Caledonia sided with de Gaulle in September 1940 — a decisive early break that left the territory politically isolated from Vichy and logistically cut off from normal banking supply chains. Small-denomination notes like this 50 centimes filled the gap left by coin shortages that had grown acute as Allied military activity in the Pacific disrupted regular shipping.

These Nouméa treasury issues were strictly local instruments, never intended for redemption beyond the territory.
