Additional information

Uruguay's 1976 coinage program coincided with the early years of the civic-military dictatorship that had formally consolidated power in June 1973. Pattern pieces from this period were produced as the regime restructured the country's monetary and economic institutions, and several proposed denominations and compositions from 1976 never reached circulation. Nickel silver was tested as an alternative to the cupronickel alloys then standard in regional coinage.

Whether this specific pattern was rejected on cost grounds or simply superseded by subsequent monetary reforms is not documented in published records.
