Comments

Campo 53 at Urbisaglia was an Italian prisoner-of-war camp established in the Marche region during the Second World War. The camp issued its own scrip denominated in centesimi and lire — a closed monetary system designed to control what prisoners could purchase at the canteen and to prevent Italian currency from circulating among internees. The Filelfo printing house in Tolentino, the nearest sizeable town, produced the notes locally, which was standard practice for Italian P.G. (Prigionieri di Guerra) camp issues rather than centrally coordinated supply.

Survival rates for Italian P.O.W. camp scrip vary sharply by camp; many issues were deliberately destroyed or confiscated at liberation.
