Additional information

Italian Somaliland's 1950 coinage was produced under the Italian Trust Territory administration, established by the United Nations after Italy was granted a ten-year trusteeship over its former colony — a provisional arrangement that would end with Somali independence in 1960. The prova, or pattern, designation indicates this piece was struck for official approval rather than circulation, almost certainly at the Rome mint.

KM#Pr4 is among a small group of prova pieces from this issue. Approved types entered circulation; rejected ones did not, and the line between the two categories in Italian colonial coinage of this period is not always cleanly documented.
