The Cassa Veneta dei Prestiti was an Austrian military finance institution established specifically to manage currency in the occupied Venetian territories during the First World War. These notes were not issued by any Italian authority — they were instruments of occupation finance, denominated in Italian centesimi to ease acceptance among the local population while keeping the monetary system under Austro-Hungarian control.
The small physical format was deliberate for low-denomination emergency use. After the Italian victory in November 1918, the series was rapidly withdrawn and most examples destroyed during currency normalization, which accounts for the relative scarcity of surviving low-denomination pieces in any condition.
