Additional information

Somalia's 1967 coinage was produced during the relatively stable early years of the civilian Somali Republic, just two years before the October 1969 military coup in which General Mohamed Siad Barre seized power following the assassination of President Shermarke. The entire pre-coup coinage series was subsequently absorbed into the new socialist state's monetary system without replacement — Barre's government didn't immediately demonetize it, meaning these coins circulated alongside the new ideological order for years.
