The State of Oaxaca issued its own coinage in 1915 under the sovereign-minded governorship of José Inés Dávila, who broke from the Carranza faction and declared Oaxaca an independent sovereign state in 1915. Federal monetary networks had effectively collapsed across much of southern Mexico, forcing regional authorities to mint their own silver to keep local commerce moving. Oaxacan provisional issues are notoriously inconsistent in die alignment and surface finish — a product of improvised minting infrastructure rather than any systematic production.
