Additional information

Guatemala's monetary system was in crisis by the early 1920s. The quetzal had not yet been introduced — that came in 1925 — and the country was operating on a debased paper currency backed by little of substance. These aluminium bronze pieces were struck as a stopgap, bridging the gap between the collapse of the old peso system and the eventual monetary reform. The two KM varieties distinguish differing die characteristics rather than issuing authority or metal changes.
