The General Güemes 50 centavos type was introduced in 1992 as part of Argentina's post-convertibility coinage reform, which pegged the new peso to the US dollar at parity — a policy that held until the catastrophic 2001–2002 collapse. Coins struck in 2000 entered circulation in the final months before that crisis, when bank runs and capital flight were already accelerating. The .2 variety distinguishes itself from the earlier .1 by the reeded edge, a modification introduced to aid vending machine compatibility.
