Obverse description Central field features the Mexican national eagle displayed, perched upon a cactus and grasping a serpent in its beak, flanked by laurel and oak branches at the base. The design closely follows the standard Republican arms type adapted for Zapatista revolutionary coinage issued by the State of Morelos. The legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA arcs along the upper periphery, with MORELOS inscribed along the lower periphery. The coin is bordered by a beaded inner rim. The overall execution reflects the crude but purposeful engraving characteristic of emergency revolutionary coinage of the Mexican Civil War period.

Additional information

The State of Morelos issued copper coinage in 1916 under Zapatista authority as a purely practical measure — the revolutionary forces controlling the region needed a functioning local currency after federal money had collapsed in credibility if not yet in circulation. Zapata's movement was ideologically hostile to the Porfirian banking system, and these coins were as much a declaration of administrative control as anything else.

Copper was the only metal realistically available. Silver had long since been hoarded or fled the region entirely.
