Bolivia's hyperinflationary crisis of the mid-1980s forced a complete monetary restructuring. The boliviano, introduced in 1987, replaced the peso boliviano at a rate of one million to one — among the more extreme redenominations of the twentieth century. Rather than print entirely new low-denomination notes from scratch, the Banco Central simply overprinted existing peso boliviano stock, converting P#189 into provisional centavo-denominated currency almost overnight.
The overprint series was always understood as a stopgap. Dedicated replacements followed quickly, rendering these provisional notes short-lived in circulation.
