Ecuador's nickel-clad steel coinage of the 1980s was introduced as the sucre inflated sharply following the oil price collapse of 1986 and successive debt crises that forced repeated currency adjustments. Cheaper base metal compositions replaced earlier nickel issues as production costs outpaced face value — a familiar spiral in Latin American monetary policy of the decade.
