| Obverse description | The Portuguese colonial arms — a crowned armillary sphere encircling the Portuguese royal shield — occupies the central field, rendered in fine relief. The shield displays the traditional quintas and castles of the Portuguese coat of arms, surmounted by a mural crown. The territorial legend S. TOMÉ·E·PRÍNCIPE arcs along the upper periphery within a beaded border, while the date 1971 appears in the lower exergue. The overall design follows the standard typology used for Portuguese colonial coinage of the mid-twentieth century. |

São Tomé and Príncipe's colonial coinage of this period was issued under Portuguese authority through the Overseas Financial Participation mechanism, which standardized bronze fractional coins across multiple African territories simultaneously. The 1971 date falls in the final years before the Carnation Revolution of April 1974 ended Portuguese colonial rule — independence followed in 1975, making this among the last issues struck for the islands under Lisbon's administration.
